Who remembers this poor terrified young girl that was found dumped in a churchyard near Hull a year ago ?
This is the first part of her story
No name, no chip, no collar, no tag and nearly completely shut down.
Well, this is the first photo we took after collecting her. She was so scared she couldn’t even stand up.
We were worried that she was pregnant because her tummy had been shaved as if for a scan, Luckily she wasn’t, because she turned out to be much younger than we originally thought. About 10 months old in this photo.
We named her Katie, and we spent the next weeks trying to be as predictable as we could. Every day was the same. Routine, kindness, love and calm.
She was too scared to even drink water, ran away if you walked towards her especially if you had a lead in your hand.
This young girl never made a single noise. Nothing. Until after some weeks we heard her tiny barks in her sleep.
We knew she was on a long journey to trust humans again, but that was ok, we had the time and the patience and she didn’t have a bad bone in her body. Such a lovely personality despite whatever her past had held.
Some time later later…..
This is Katie after she had been with us a few weeks. Off lead in a public field.
We spent a few weeks teaching her recall in the secure field and making sure she would not run away if she got spooked. But she didn’t, and just ran back to us.
She was now in a routine, eating well, had vaccinations and that all important missing microchip.
She trusted us, and our own dogs and it was time for her start to trust other people too
Katie went to our most experienced foster carer where she met lots of people and dogs all very carefully and slowly so she realised that it wasn’t just one human that was good.
In this time she turned into a confident monkey and developed a liking for parkour to devour apple crumbles.
And then the day came for her to go to her new home.
